Jake th0ught that Kyle was a "nerd", a b0ring, overly-studi0us pers0n. He seemed t00 different fr0m himself t0 ever be his friend.

     0ne day I saw a b0y fr0m my class walking h0me fr0m sch00l. He was rather new t0 0ur sch00l and I hardly knew him. He was 0ne 0f th0se students wh0 t0pped all the test. His name was Kyle. It l00ked like he was carrying all his b00ks. I th0ught myself, "Why w0uld any0ne bring h0me all his b00ks 0n a Friday? He must really be a nerd." I shrugged my sh0ulders and went 0n.

     As I was walking. I saw a bunch 0k kids running t0wards him. They ran at him, kn0cking all his b00ks 0ut 0f his arms and tripping him, s0 he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass ab0ut ten feet fr0m him. He l00jed up and I saw a terriblr sadness in his eyes. My heart went 0ut t0 him. S0, I j0gged 0ver t0 him as he crawled ar0und l00king f0r his glasses. As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Th0se guys are jerks. They really sh0uld learn s0me manners."

     He l00ked at me and said, "Hey, thanks!" There was a big smile 0n his face. Itt was 0ne 0f th0se smiles that sh0wed real gratitued. I helped him pich up his b00ks, and asked him where he lived. As it turned 0ut, he lived near me, s0 we decided t0 walk h0me t0gether.

     We taiked all the way h0me. I ask him if he wanted t0 play f00tball 0n Saturday with me and my friends. He said "Yes." Kyle hung 0ut with my friends and me all weekend and the m0re I g0t t0 kn0w him, the m0re I liked him; and s0 did my friends.

     M0nday m0rning c0me, and there was Kyle with the huge stack 0f b00ks again. I st0pped him and said, "B0y, y0u are really t0 build s0me big muscles with this pile 0f b00ks every day!" He just laughed.

     0ver the next f0ur years, Kyle and I became best friends. When we were seni0r, we began t0 think ab0ut c0llege. Kyle decided 0n Ge0rget0wn University, and I was g0ing t0 Duke. I knew that we w0uld always be
friends, that the miles apart w0uld never be a pr0blem.

     0n the m0rning 0f Graduati0n Day, Imet Kyle at the sch00l entrance. He l00ked great. He was 0ne 0f th0se guys that really f0und himself during high sch00l. He had filled 0ut and actually l00ked g00d in glasses. He had bec0me 0ne 0f the m0st p0pular students. S0metimes, I even felt jeal0us, and this was 0ne 0f the times. But, he was l00king very nerv0us. As a t0p student, he had t0 deliver the graduati0n speech. I was s0 glad it wasn't me having t0 get up there and speak. S0, I slapped him 0n the back and said, "Hey, Big Guy, y0u'll be great!" He l00ked at me with 0ne 0f th0se l00k (the really grateful 0ne) and smiled.

     As he started his speech, Kyle cleared his thr0ut, and began: "Graduati0n is a time t0 thank th0se wh0 helped y0u make it thr0ugh th0se t0ugh years---y0ur parents, y0ur teachers, y0ur siblings, mybe a c0ach... but m0stly y0ur friends. I am here t0 tell all 0f y0u that being a friend t0 s0me 0ne is a best giftvy0u can give them. I am g0ing t0 tell y0u a st0ry....."

     I just stared at my friend with disbelief as he t0ld the st0ry 0f the first day we met. He had planned t0 kill himself 0ver the weekend. He talked h0w he had cleaned 0ut his l0cker s0 his m0ther w0uld n0t have t0 d0 it later and was carrying his stuff h0me. He l00ked at me and gave me a little smile. "Thankfully. I was saved. My friend saved me fr0m d0ing the unspeakable."

     I heard a gasp g0 thr0ugh the cr0wd as this hands0me, p0pular b0y t0ld us all ab0ut his weakest m0ment. I saw his m0ther and father l00king at me, smiling that same grateful smile. N0t until that m0ment did I realise its depth.
